Understand Paper Shredder Security

Shredder security is more than “cross-cut” versus “micro-cut.” The DIN 66399 standard uses protection classes and P-levels to describe how small the shredded pieces need to be for a given risk level. A P-2 strip-cut shredder is fine for junk mail. A P-4 or higher cross-cut shredder is a better fit for tax records, medical documents, or anything with an account number on it.

Picking the wrong security level does not just waste money. It can leave sensitive information reconstructable.

This connects directly to two other decisions: whether your documents fall under HIPAA or GDPR rules, and whether a shredder or a document safe is the better tool for the job.

How We Research Paper Shredders

We aim to make shredder research easier to understand and easier to verify. Our comparisons draw on multiple sources rather than a single product listing or marketing page.

For product research, we compare manufacturer specifications, independent reviews, warranty terms, and current retailer data. We look at cut type, security level, sheet capacity, bin size, duty cycle, features, price, and intended use.

When we have personally tested a product, we explain exactly what we tested and how. When we have not tested a product ourselves, we do not describe it as hands-on tested.

Prices, availability, and specifications change often. Confirm purchasing details against the current retailer or manufacturer listing before you buy.

For document security and compliance topics, we prioritize authoritative sources and note when the answer depends on a specific regulation, standard, jurisdiction, or retention requirement
