Our Editorial Methodology

How We Research, Evaluate and Update Our Content

Good product advice starts with good research.

Our editorial methodology exists to explain how ShredProInk researches paper shredders, document security and related topics before information is published or updated.

We want readers to understand where information comes from, what we have verified, what we have personally tested, and where limitations exist.

Our Research Process

Our research process can vary depending on the type of article, but generally involves several stages.

1. Define the Reader’s Decision

We first identify the question the article needs to answer.

A product comparison, buying guide, maintenance article and document-security guide require different types of research.

We therefore avoid treating every topic as a generic product review.

2. Research Primary Sources

Where available, we prioritize information from primary sources.

These can include:

  • Manufacturer product pages
  • Manufacturer specification sheets
  • Owner manuals
  • Warranty documentation
  • Official standards and regulatory sources
  • Official government or institutional resources

Primary sources are particularly important for specifications, warranty terms, operating requirements and other information that can change between models or over time.

3. Compare Independent Sources

Manufacturer information is useful, but it is not the only information we consider.

For product research, we compare manufacturer specifications, independent reviews, warranty information and current retailer data.

Independent sources can help identify practical considerations that may not be obvious from a specification sheet.

We distinguish those observations from manufacturer claims rather than presenting them as the same type of evidence.

4. Check Current Product Information

Product prices, availability, specifications and model lineups can change.

Where current information matters, we check available retailer and manufacturer data and identify information that may require future updating.

A price shown at the time of publication should not be interpreted as a permanent price.

Hands-On Testing

Hands-on testing is different from research.

When we personally test a product, we describe what was tested and the conditions or criteria used where that information is relevant to the recommendation.

When we have not personally tested a product, we do not describe it as hands-on tested.

Instead, we use transparent language such as:

We compared manufacturer specifications, independent reviews, warranty information and current retailer data.

This distinction prevents research-based conclusions from being presented as personal testing.

How We Compare Products

A comparison should help a reader understand meaningful differences rather than simply produce a longer specification table.

Depending on the product and intended use, relevant factors may include:

  • Security level
  • Cutting method
  • Sheet capacity
  • Duty cycle
  • Bin capacity
  • Feed opening
  • Noise
  • Jam handling
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Warranty
  • Price and value
  • Intended workload
  • Size and portability

Not every factor matters equally for every buyer.

Our recommendations therefore consider the intended use rather than assuming that one specification automatically determines the best product.

How We Make Recommendations

We do not use a single universal definition of “best.”

The right product can depend on workload, security requirements, budget, available space, frequency of use and other practical considerations.

Where appropriate, we explain why a product may be a good fit and also identify limitations or situations where another option may make more sense.

A recommendation should help a reader make a decision, not simply tell them which product to buy.

Fact Checking

Before publication or a significant update, we review important factual claims against available sources.

For product content, this may include checking:

  • Product specifications
  • Security ratings
  • Manufacturer claims
  • Warranty information
  • Current pricing or availability
  • Product model names
  • Compatibility information
  • Relevant standards

Where information cannot be confidently verified, we avoid presenting it as established fact.

Updating Content

Some information has a relatively long useful life. Other information can become outdated quickly.

Product pricing, availability, specifications and model availability are examples of information that may change.

We periodically review important content and update it when meaningful changes occur.

An updated article does not necessarily mean that every product has been retested. Updates may involve new specifications, pricing, availability, source verification or changes to the recommendations.

Affiliate Relationships

Some product pages contain affiliate links.

If a reader purchases through an affiliate link, ShredProInk receives a commission at no additional cost to the reader.

Affiliate relationships are disclosed because readers should know when a commercial relationship exists.

Affiliate compensation does not change the factual information presented on a page or guarantee that a product will be recommended.

Corrections and Feedback

We welcome corrections.

If you find an inaccurate specification, outdated price, broken link, misleading statement or other factual problem, please contact us with the relevant page and information.

When a correction is warranted, we may update the content rather than leaving known inaccuracies in place.

What We Don’t Do

We do not:

  • Claim hands-on testing that did not occur
  • Present manufacturer marketing claims as independent test results
  • Guarantee product performance
  • Treat temporary retailer pricing as permanent
  • Assume one product is right for every buyer
  • Hide known limitations simply because a product is commercially useful

Our goal is straightforward: provide useful, transparent information that helps readers make better decisions.
